SUN Mobility names new CEOs for expansion

Electric vehicle (EV) energy infrastructure company SUN Mobility has strengthened its leadership team with two chief executive appointments as it prepares to expand its battery-swapping technology, manufacturing capabilities and operations in India and international markets.

The company has appointed Satish Sundaresan as Chief Executive Officer of SUN Mobility, while Kamaldeep Singh will take charge as CEO of Indofast Energy, its 50:50 joint venture with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IndianOil).

The appointments create separate leadership responsibilities for technology development and manufacturing on one side, and business operations and network expansion on the other. The move comes as India’s electric mobility sector looks to make EV adoption more practical and affordable, particularly for commercial fleets and drivers who depend on their vehicles for daily earnings.

SUN Mobility develops battery-swapping solutions that allow electric vehicle users to exchange a depleted battery for a fully charged one instead of waiting for the battery to recharge. The model can reduce vehicle downtime and help address one of the key challenges in electric mobility: keeping vehicles on the road while managing charging time and battery costs.

Sundaresan to lead technology and manufacturing

As CEO of SUN Mobility, Sundaresan will oversee engineering, manufacturing operations and global sourcing. His responsibilities include scaling the production and delivery of Smart Batteries, Quick Interchange Stations (QIS) and energy platforms for Indofast Energy in India and SUN Mobility’s international businesses.

He will also lead manufacturing capacity expansion, supply-chain resilience and the company’s technology roadmap. Product innovation based on an open-architecture platform will be another priority as the business explores new applications and prepares for its next phase of growth.

Sundaresan brings more than 25 years of experience across automotive technology, software and electronics manufacturing. Before joining SUN Mobility, he served as Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice-President at Lumax Auto Technologies, where he headed electronics manufacturing operations.

Earlier, he was Chief Strategy Officer and Managing Director at Elektrobit India and held roles at Mercedes-Benz and Bosch. His experience in integrating hardware and software, building engineering teams and scaling manufacturing operations is expected to support SUN Mobility’s efforts to improve product development and delivery.

The focus will be on making batteries and swapping stations available to business partners more quickly, reliably and affordably. Greater manufacturing capacity and a stronger supply chain could help the company support network expansion while serving customers across different markets.

Kamaldeep Singh to expand Indofast Energy

Singh will lead Indofast Energy’s next stage of growth, with a focus on expanding its nationwide battery-swapping network and building an operational model that can grow sustainably.

Indofast Energy combines IndianOil’s national presence with SUN Mobility’s battery-swapping technology. The joint venture aims to make battery replacement more accessible to electric vehicle users, including those operating two-wheelers, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles.

Singh has more than two decades of experience in profit-and-loss management, consumer businesses and large-scale distributed operations. His previous leadership roles include serving as CEO of Big Bazaar and CEO of e-commerce platform DealShare.

His experience in managing businesses with extensive networks is expected to help Indofast Energy improve execution, customer experience and unit economics as it expands. These factors will be important in building a commercially viable battery-swapping network, where station utilisation, battery availability and operating costs influence profitability.

The company follows a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, under which users can access batteries as a service rather than bearing the full cost of purchasing one with an electric vehicle. This can lower the upfront cost of EV ownership and make the technology more accessible to drivers and fleet operators.

Indofast Energy’s expansion strategy centres on making battery swapping a convenient alternative to conventional charging, particularly for users who need to minimise downtime. A larger network of swapping stations can improve convenience, provided that stations are accessible and compatible batteries are available when required.

Leadership change comes as EV adoption grows

Welcoming the appointments, SUN Mobility Co-Founder and Chairman Chetan Maini said dedicated leadership across the technology and operating businesses would be important to the company’s next phase of expansion. He highlighted Sundaresan’s experience in automotive electronics and mobility technology, alongside Singh’s background in scaling high-volume businesses.

Sundaresan said his priority would be to strengthen the company’s technology platform and ensure batteries and swapping stations reach partners faster and more reliably. Singh said he would focus on rapidly expanding Indofast Energy’s network and making EV energy refuelling simpler for users across India.

The appointments reflect a broader challenge facing the EV industry. While electric vehicles can reduce dependence on conventional fuels and support lower-emission transport, adoption also depends on the availability of reliable infrastructure and affordable operating models.

Battery swapping offers one way to address these concerns, particularly for vehicles that travel frequently or operate for long hours. However, scaling the model requires investment in batteries, swapping stations, manufacturing, logistics and technology that can work across vehicle platforms.

With Sundaresan leading technology and manufacturing and Singh overseeing Indofast Energy’s operations, SUN Mobility is positioning its two businesses for more focused execution. The immediate priorities will be to strengthen product delivery, expand the battery-swapping network and build a sustainable business model as India’s electric mobility market develops.
