Trump loses $168 mn after midterm rout

Democratic wins send Trump Media shares tumbling, putting crypto ventures under scrutiny

US President Donald Trump has lost an estimated $168 million from his personal fortune following the Democratic Party’s sweeping victory in the 2026 midterm elections. The election outcome triggered a sharp sell-off in businesses and financial assets associated with the president, with shares of Trump Media & Technology Group plunging nearly 25% on November 4 to hit an all-time low.

The decline came after Democrats secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, delivering a major setback to Trump’s Republican Party. The results have raised questions about the president’s political influence and the future of business ventures closely connected to his public image.

Trump’s estimated net worth fell by $168 million during Wednesday’s trading session, bringing his fortune to approximately $6.4 billion. The decline represented just over 2.5% of his estimated wealth in a single day.

The financial setback highlights the connection between Trump’s political standing and the market value of several companies and digital assets associated with him.

The biggest contributor to Trump’s latest financial losses was the sharp fall in Trump Media & Technology Group shares. The company, listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol DJT, operates Truth Social, the social networking platform frequently used by Trump to communicate with supporters and announce political decisions.

Trump Media shares initially fell more than 11% in early trading on November 4, reaching approximately $5.23. However, selling pressure increased as the trading session progressed.

The stock eventually touched an intraday low of $4.46 before closing at $4.49, marking a decline of 24.5% for the day.

The fall pushed the company’s shares to a new all-time intraday low. The stock has also lost more than 66% of its value since the beginning of 2026.

Trump owns approximately 114 million shares in the company, representing around 41% of its ownership. His stake is held through a trust managed by his son, Donald Trump Jr.

The sharp decline in the company’s market value directly affected Trump’s estimated net worth. His holding, which was once valued at several billion dollars, has lost considerable value as investors reassess the company’s business prospects.

Trump’s financial interests extend beyond social networking and include several cryptocurrency ventures associated with his family.

World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency business linked to the Trump family, has also faced pressure following the election results. Its WLFI token fell below five cents, compared with a peak of approximately 31 cents in 2025.

Trump reportedly continues to hold around 15 billion tokens associated with the venture. He has previously earned more than $500 million through cryptocurrency asset sales.

Another digital asset connected to the president, the $TRUMP meme coin, also experienced a decline. The cryptocurrency fell approximately 10% to around $1.40 following the Democratic victory. It had previously reached a high of approximately $45.

The decline in these digital assets has added to concerns about the performance of Trump’s business interests. Cryptocurrency prices can be particularly volatile and are often influenced by investor sentiment, public attention and market speculation.

The simultaneous fall in Trump Media shares and cryptocurrency values suggests that investors are reassessing the commercial prospects of ventures closely associated with the president.

The latest share price decline comes at a difficult time for Trump Media, which has struggled to generate substantial revenue despite its high-profile ownership.

The company reported a net loss of $238.1 million in the second quarter of 2026, while its revenue stood at just $1.7 million.

Its flagship platform, Truth Social, has also experienced declining online traffic. Website visits reportedly fell around 30% year-on-year as of September.

The company has been exploring opportunities beyond social networking to improve its business prospects. These include cryptocurrency-related ventures and plans to expand into the fusion energy sector through a proposed combination with TAE Technologies.

However, weak financial performance and a declining share price have raised questions about its ability to establish sustainable revenue streams.

Democratic victory raises questions over Trump’s business interests

The Democratic victory could have consequences beyond the stock market. With control of both chambers of Congress, opposition lawmakers are expected to have greater scope to investigate the Trump administration and businesses associated with the president and his family.

Democrats have previously indicated that they would examine potential conflicts of interest involving Trump’s business activities, including his cryptocurrency ventures.

The election results could therefore bring additional political and regulatory scrutiny to companies linked to the president.

Trump, meanwhile, blamed his absence from the ballot for the Republican Party’s poor performance. In a post on Truth Social, he said Republicans would have won by a landslide if he had personally contested the election.

He also argued that his absence had affected voter turnout. However, he said he was willing to accept the election results and work with the incoming Democratic leadership.

Despite the latest setback, Trump’s overall wealth remains substantial. A significant portion of his estimated fortune is linked to real estate, golf courses, resorts and other business holdings rather than publicly traded financial assets.

The $168 million decline represents a change in the estimated market value of his investments, rather than an equivalent loss of cash.

Nevertheless, the developments highlight the risks facing businesses whose valuations are closely connected to a political figure’s popularity and public influence.

For Trump, the Democratic midterm sweep has delivered both a political and financial setback. The performance of Trump Media, his cryptocurrency ventures and other associated businesses will remain under scrutiny as the new Congress prepares to take shape.
