Tata Elxsi profit rises 10%, revenue grows 15%

Transportation and media growth lift earnings, while higher costs temper profit growth

Tata Elxsi reported a 10% year-on-year increase in net profit for the September quarter, supported by growth in its transportation and media businesses. Revenue from operations rose 15%, reflecting continued demand for the company’s engineering, design and technology services. However, higher employee and operating expenses limited the pace of profit growth, leaving investors to assess whether the company can sustain its performance in the coming quarters.

The Tata Group company posted a net profit of ₹170.3 crore for the second quarter of financial year 2026-27, compared with approximately ₹154.8 crore in the corresponding period last year. Revenue from operations increased to ₹1,055.7 crore from ₹918.1 crore a year earlier.

The results came as investors continued to monitor spending trends in the global technology and engineering services industry. Tata Elxsi provides design-led technology services across transportation, media and communications, and healthcare and life sciences.

Its latest performance showed growth across all three major business verticals, although the company continues to face a challenging environment marked by cautious technology spending and uncertainty in the electric vehicle market.

Tata Elxsi’s operating revenue grew 3.4% sequentially from ₹1,021.1 crore in the June quarter. In constant currency terms, quarter-on-quarter growth stood at 2.3%, indicating that the improvement was not driven solely by currency movements.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose 7.1% sequentially to ₹231.4 crore. The EBITDA margin stood at 21.9%, reflecting an improvement in operating performance during the quarter.

The company said operational efficiencies helped support margins despite salary revisions across its workforce. Employee costs and other operating expenses remain important factors for a business that relies heavily on specialised engineering and technology talent.

Profit before tax, before exceptional items, increased to ₹239.1 crore from ₹214.7 crore a year earlier. Total income, including other income, reached ₹1,090.6 crore, compared with ₹967 crore in the year-ago quarter.

While revenue growth remained stronger than profit growth, the improvement in sequential EBITDA and margins offered some evidence that operational efficiencies were helping offset cost pressures.

The transportation business remains Tata Elxsi’s largest segment, contributing more than 55% of its software development and services revenue. The vertical recorded 2% sequential growth in constant currency terms, supported by new deal wins and demand in adjacent markets, particularly aerospace.

The company secured a multi-year contract with a leading automotive original equipment manufacturer to develop a cloud-based telematics and connected-vehicle ecosystem. Such systems enable vehicles to exchange information, support remote monitoring and improve connected mobility services.

The media and communications business also performed well, recording 3.4% sequential growth in constant currency terms. Growth was supported by the expansion of existing customer engagements and new contracts. Healthcare and life sciences revenue increased 3.5% sequentially in constant currency terms.

Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Manoj Raghavan said growth during the quarter was broad-based across the company’s three key verticals. He also highlighted opportunities in aerospace and the company’s collaboration with Sarla Aviation on Shunya, an electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft.

Tata Elxsi shares rose around 7% on October 14, reaching an intraday high of ₹3,657 on the BSE after the results announcement. The rally reflected investor interest in the company’s revenue growth and improving operating performance.

However, the market reaction was more positive than the outlook offered by several brokerages. Morgan Stanley maintained its ‘Underweight’ rating with a target price of ₹3,400, citing valuation concerns despite the better-than-expected revenue and operating margin performance.

Motilal Oswal retained its ‘Sell’ rating and a target price of ₹2,970. It expects growth to improve in the second half of FY27 but said sustained acceleration will depend on converting new deals into revenue. Such engagements typically take two to three quarters to scale up.

JM Financial maintained its ‘Reduce’ rating with a target price of ₹3,358, while expecting support from automotive projects in the US and India, media and communications demand, and a recovery in healthcare.

Weak European automotive demand and delayed client decisions remain key risks for Tata Elxsi. The company expects second-half revenue to improve, but investors will watch whether new contracts translate into stronger growth and sustained margin recovery.
