Google’s new TV streamer leaks

Google could be preparing a new TV streaming device with improved processing power, expanded storage and voice controls that work without a remote. The next-generation Google TV Streamer is reportedly in development, with built-in microphones and a presence sensor among the expected hardware changes.

The reported upgrade comes as streaming devices become increasingly important to the connected home, bringing entertainment apps, voice assistants and smart-home controls together through the television. Google has not officially confirmed the new model, and details about its launch date, price and final specifications remain unavailable.

According to reports, the biggest change could be the addition of microphones to the streaming box itself. The current Google TV Streamer uses a microphone built into its remote for Google Assistant voice commands. The new version could listen for “Hey Google” requests directly, allowing users to search for content or access supported smart-home functions without picking up the remote.

This could make voice interaction more convenient for people who regularly use Google TV to access streaming platforms and control connected devices. However, the precise functions supported by the built-in microphones have not been confirmed.

The device is also expected to include presence sensing, which detects when someone approaches or enters a room. The technology could allow the streaming box to trigger certain display functions when a person is nearby.

One possible use is activating an ambient screen that displays photographs, weather information or other useful details when the television is not being used for viewing. Similar features are available on some smart televisions, including Google TV models from TCL. It remains unclear how Google intends to use presence sensing on its own streaming hardware.

The reported changes suggest that the company wants the TV Streamer to play a more active role in the smart home, rather than serving only as a device for accessing entertainment applications.

Hardware performance could also improve significantly. The existing Google TV Streamer runs on a MediaTek MT8696 processor and includes 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Reports indicate that the next model will use a faster chip and offer more internal storage, although the processor model and storage capacity have not been disclosed.

A faster processor could help applications launch more quickly and make navigation through the Google TV interface smoother. Additional storage could provide more room for applications as streaming platforms and connected-home services expand their features.

Google is reportedly retaining much of the current device’s design, with a slightly narrower profile possible for the new version. The remote control may receive additional shortcut buttons alongside the existing YouTube and Netflix controls. The new buttons are reportedly intended for sponsored applications, although their final configuration has not been confirmed.

The Find My Remote feature is also expected to remain. It helps users locate a misplaced controller, addressing one of the common inconveniences of television use.

The next Google TV Streamer is expected to continue running Google TV. The platform combines streaming applications, personalised recommendations and access to entertainment services in one interface. Google has recently expanded its television ecosystem with Gemini artificial intelligence features, smart-home controls using Matter over Thread and wireless audio pairing with Google Home speakers.

These capabilities already work with the current TV Streamer, so it is not yet clear whether the next model will introduce new software functions or focus primarily on hardware improvements.

The timing is significant as Google faces competition from Amazon’s Fire TV devices and Apple’s Apple TV hardware. Amazon has recently refreshed its streaming products, while a new Apple TV 4K has also been the subject of reports. Better performance and more convenient controls could help Google keep its device competitive.

Price will be another important consideration. Google recently increased the price of its existing TV Streamer in the US, making the cost of the next model a key factor for buyers weighing an upgrade. The company has not disclosed pricing for the reported new device, and its availability in India remains unknown.

For existing owners, the value of upgrading will depend on whether the faster chip, additional storage and hands-free features deliver a noticeable improvement in everyday use. Those considering a purchase may want to wait for official details before making a decision.
