Sensex falls 870 points, Nifty slips below 22,900

JSW Steel, Eicher Motors, SBI gain while Axis Bank, Tata Motors PV, Bajaj Finance fall

Indian stock markets ended sharply lower on Monday, October 19, as selling in private banking shares, elevated crude oil prices and concerns over quarterly earnings dragged benchmark indices down. The BSE Sensex fell 876.37 points, or 1.17%, to close at 73,852.90, while the NSE Nifty 50 declined 257.20 points, or 1.11%, to settle at 22,888.95.

The decline ended the market’s two-session winning streak and pushed the Nifty below the important 22,900 mark. Investors turned cautious as they assessed September-quarter results from major lenders and weighed concerns over global oil prices and geopolitical tensions.

Axis Bank was the biggest loser on the Nifty 50, falling around 4.2%. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles dropped about 3.1%, while Bajaj Finance, Trent and Infosys were also among the leading laggards. HDFC Bank declined around 2.3%, adding to the pressure from banking stocks.

On the other hand, JSW Steel led the Nifty 50 gainers, rising around 2.1%. Eicher Motors, State Bank of India (SBI), Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and ONGC also ended higher, offering some support in an otherwise weak market. JSW Steel and ONGC were among the strongest performers, while SBI showed relative resilience as private lenders came under pressure.

The sell-off was led by private sector banks, which carry significant weight in the benchmark indices. Axis Bank shares fell despite the lender reporting a rise in quarterly profit, as the result fell short of market expectations. Investors also remained concerned about pressure on lending margins and the outlook for bank earnings.

HDFC Bank reported a 4.6% rise in net profit to Rs 19,510 crore, but weaker treasury income and higher provisions weighed on its results. The bank’s share-price decline added to the pressure on the Sensex and Nifty. Selling in other private lenders further weakened sentiment towards the financial sector.

Crude oil prices remained another concern. Brent crude traded above $107 a barrel, with geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz keeping energy markets on edge. India imports a large share of its crude oil requirements, making the economy vulnerable to sustained increases in global energy prices. Expensive oil can raise the import bill, add to inflationary pressure and weigh on the rupee.

Information technology shares also contributed to the decline, with Infosys among the major Nifty losers. Investors remained selective as they assessed company earnings and booked profits in stocks that had rallied in the previous session.

Despite the broad market decline, the Nifty PSU Bank index was among the few areas of strength. SBI gained, while select public sector lenders benefited from encouraging quarterly results. The relative performance of public sector banks contrasted with the weakness in private lenders, where investors focused on margins and earnings expectations.

The fall came after a strong week for Indian equities, during which the Sensex and Nifty recorded solid gains. Monday’s decline suggested that investors were willing to lock in profits as fresh concerns emerged over bank results, crude oil prices and global developments.

Market participants will now track upcoming corporate earnings, movements in crude oil prices and developments around the Strait of Hormuz. Investors will also watch the proposed Jio Platforms initial public offering, expected to open for subscription on October 21, as one of the major events in the week ahead.

The market’s near-term direction may depend on whether banking stocks stabilise and global oil prices ease. Until then, investors are likely to remain selective, with quarterly results and company-specific developments driving individual shares even as the broader market faces pressure.
