OpenAI claims major breakthrough in mathematics

AI agents tackle Navier-Stokes puzzle in 88 hours, faces scrutiny from mathematicians

OpenAI has claimed that its artificial intelligence system has found a solution to the 90-year-old Navier-Stokes problem, one of mathematics’ most challenging unsolved questions.

The company said about 10,000 AI agents worked simultaneously on different approaches and produced the result within 88 hours. The problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems, carries a $1 million reward for a verified solution.

OpenAI said its proof was formally checked using Lean. However, mathematicians have urged caution, with questions still surrounding independent verification and research attribution. The claim could mark a major step forward for AI-assisted mathematical research.
