Meta ordered to pay $25 bn in privacy case

New Mexico jury found misleading privacy claims as Meta prepares to challenge landmark ruling

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has been ordered to pay $25 billion to New Mexico after a jury found that it misled consumers about data privacy and user safety.

The October 21 ruling follows a lawsuit linked to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which exposed how personal information from millions of Facebook users was harvested. The jury found that 26 of 29 statements made by Meta and its leadership were misleading, resulting in more than 43 million alleged violations of state consumer protection laws.

Meta has rejected the allegations and plans to appeal the decision.
