Hyundai Motor Group has announced an investment of $15.5 billion, approximately ₹1.47 lakh crore, in India between 2026 and 2032, signalling a major expansion of its automotive operations. The South Korean conglomerate plans to strengthen manufacturing capacity, expand research and development (R&D), develop local suppliers and invest in next-generation automotive technologies.
The investment was announced on October 13 following a meeting between Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The seven-year plan positions India as a key market for the group’s long-term growth and aims to establish the country as a major global manufacturing and export hub.
The proposed investment will cover Hyundai Motor India and Kia India, along with initiatives across the wider automotive ecosystem. The group also plans to establish a dedicated investment entity in India to coordinate spending, identify local partners and manage projects across different business segments.
The announcement comes as global automakers look to expand production in India, supported by rising domestic demand, a growing supplier network and opportunities to serve international markets.
A key focus will be expanding manufacturing capabilities to meet demand for passenger vehicles while strengthening India’s role in Hyundai’s global supply chain. The group currently has an annual production capacity exceeding 1.4 million vehicles in India across its manufacturing operations.
The planned investment is expected to support additional capacity, although the company has not announced a complete year-wise spending schedule or specified the exact capacity additions under the new programme.
Manufacturing and local sourcing take priority
Manufacturing expansion forms a central part of Hyundai Motor Group’s investment strategy. The company intends to strengthen operations at Hyundai Motor India and Kia India, allowing both businesses to respond to changing customer preferences and future demand.
India’s passenger vehicle market has become increasingly competitive, with manufacturers investing in SUVs, electric vehicles and technology-led features. Expanding production capacity and improving operational efficiency will be important as companies compete for market share.
The group also plans to deepen partnerships with Indian component manufacturers. Greater localisation of vehicle parts can reduce dependence on imported components, strengthen domestic supply chains and improve cost efficiency.
Developing local suppliers could create opportunities for smaller manufacturers, engineering firms and automotive technology companies. It may also help Indian suppliers become part of Hyundai’s international production network.
The investment is expected to support employment across manufacturing, engineering, research and associated services. However, Hyundai has not provided a specific estimate of the number of jobs the new programme could generate.
₹6,300 crore-plus focus on research and development
Research and development is another important element of the investment plan. Hyundai Motor Group intends to allocate around $700 million, or approximately ₹6,300 crore, towards strengthening its R&D infrastructure in India.
The proposed spending includes expanding research facilities, developing engineering capabilities and establishing an advanced vehicle testing track. These facilities are expected to support the development and evaluation of vehicles and automotive technologies suited to Indian conditions.
A stronger R&D presence could allow Hyundai to develop products more closely aligned with local customer requirements while contributing to global engineering programmes. India’s existing pool of automotive engineers and technical professionals provides a foundation for expanding these activities.
The group also plans to invest in future mobility technologies and innovation. These areas could include electric vehicle infrastructure, new mobility services and solutions that support changes in how vehicles are developed, operated and maintained.
Hyundai’s broader strategy includes supporting local innovation and collaboration with startups and technology partners. Such partnerships could help accelerate the development of new automotive solutions and strengthen India’s position as an engineering and technology centre.
India’s role in global automotive growth
The investment reinforces India’s importance to Hyundai Motor Group’s international operations. A large domestic customer base, established manufacturing facilities and access to skilled workers make the country an important location for production and exports.
Expanding Indian operations could help the group serve domestic customers while supplying vehicles and components to overseas markets. A stronger export base would also connect Indian manufacturing more closely with Hyundai’s global supply chain.
The plan comes amid a wider shift among global automakers towards diversifying production and strengthening regional supply networks. India’s manufacturing ecosystem and policy focus on domestic production have made it an increasingly important destination for long-term investment.
The immediate challenge will be translating the announcement into projects, production expansion and sustained local investment. Details on the timing of individual projects, additional manufacturing capacity and employment creation are yet to be fully outlined.
